About The Founders
When considering what makes Deron School so special, one must look to the expert, caring guidance provided to staff and students alike by founders Ronald and Diane Alter.
As young professionals working with multiply disabled children over four decades ago, they realized that existing educational programs in the public sector were not meeting the needs of these children. Consequently, in November of 1967, they founded the Deron School.
Over the next 40 years, Deron School evolved from a one-room program with a single student into two comprehensive school programs providing essential educational services to more than 275 disabled students from eight New Jersey counties.
Today Ron Alter serves as Executive Director. Deron continues to thrive - Its ongoing success is a tribute to the dedication and continued guidance from Ron and Diane. In addition to their leadership roles at the school, both serve as volunteers in community-service organizations.

Kudos to Outstanding Deron Staff Members!
Deron staff members encourage the maximum development of each child’s potential. They understand the challenges disabled students face, and they recognize each accomplishment, no matter how small. Both schools can boast a strong community of dedicated staff members, many of whom have been with the school for ten, fifteen or more years.
Beginning in 1995, the Council of Private Schools for Children with Special Needs has presented the Ruth K. Newman Award for Excellence to selected staff members from each of the Council schools at an annual Awards Banquet. Given in honor of Ms. Newman, a pioneer in establishing private-school education for disabled youngsters, this award recognizes the individuals for their outstanding contributions and dedication in providing educational services to children with special needs.
Since its inception, the honorees from both Deron I and Deron II programs, have represented a cross-section of dedicated personnel, including both professionals and para-professionals in positions ranging from Support Services to Classroom Instruction and Program Administration.
