February 9th – Parent Workshop

Workshop #2 in the series presented by Dr. Daphna El-Roy is scheduled for Thursday, February 9th.   The topic will be Transferring Skills to New Situations.  The session will take place at Deron I (Union) from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.  Feel free to contact the school with any questions or for further information (908-206-0444).  In the event of inclement weather, please check the web-site for possible cancellation.

DERON OFFERS PARENT WORKSHOPS

Deron is offering a series of parent workshops where they will learn various strategies to assist their children in acquiring skills used in home & community settings.

Presented by Behavior Analyst, Daphna El-Roy, each session will relate to a different topic. Workshops are scheduled to take place at Deron I – Union in the evening, and will run for approximately 1½ hours (7:00 – 8:30 p.m.)  Notices will be sent home prior to each workshop with specific information about the session & topic.  Refreshments will be served.

DERON II OPEN HOUSE

Deron II (Montclair) held an Open House on Thursday, December 1st, for district Child Study Team members and professionals in the field of Special Education.  Those in attendance were given a short presentation of Deron’s programs, observed classes in and activities throughout the school, and enjoyed the opportunity to speak with Deron administrators over lunch.

DERON I Offers Program for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders

DERON I’s  APEX Program for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders will serve students 13-21 and, under the direction of highly trained staff, will employ a variety of evidence-based instructional strategies. The curricula will address the unique needs of students with ASDs and will include academics, life skills, communication and social skills, and community-based instruction.

In addition, students will have the opportunity to interact with peers who are not on the spectrum, with advanced language and social skills. Physical education, music, art trip and work in the community will also be part of the APEX program. Family communication will be ongoing regarding goals, progress on goals and transition planning.

The Deron School has provided educational programs to students with a wide range of disabilities since opening their doors to Multiply Handicapped Deaf students in 1967. Along the way, their programs have expanded to meet the needs of students with Neurological, Cognitive, Communication and Learning Disabilities.

Given their success in meeting the challenges of an ever-changing population for over four decades, they are pleased to offer their new APEX Program at Deron I (Union).

ESY 2011 Promises a Summer of Fun, Adventure & Learning

Staff and students alike are gearing up for the 2011 Extended School Year! Six-week programs at both Deron I and Deron II will run from July 1st through August 12th (closed July 4th), 8:30 a.m. through 1:30 p.m.

In addition to academic instruction, each program offers a behavior management program, educational and recreational field trips, breakfast and hot lunch programs, transition activities, physical education (including structured and recreational swimming) and related services based on students’ individual IEPs.

Both programs are housed in well-maintained facilities that include spacious, air-conditioned classrooms, gymnasiums, specialty rooms and cafeterias; and are staffed with year-round Administrators, certified Teachers, experienced Teacher Assistants, full-time Nurses, and certified Social Workers and Speech / Language Specialists.

Many of the summer activities correlate with theme-based units that vary from year to year. Favorites from the past include “Going Green”, “Careers”, “Carnival Time” and “Making A Difference”. Each year, the programs culminate with a school-wide event that highlights the theme for that summer!
