Autism Rates in NJ Are Up 500% from 2000-2016

Autism Rates in NJ Continue to Rise: Choose The Deron School

A newly released report has exposed the significantly strained resources used to support growing autism rates in NJ. In fact, autism rates among eight-year-olds in New Jersey have increased by 500% from 2000-2016, creating a critical demand for diagnosis, treatment, and educational resources.

Unfortunately, this surging need has led to long wait times for diagnosis services, ranging from six to 24 months, and lengthy wait lists for special schools that cater to students with autism. According to researchers who focused on four NJ counties—Union, Essex, Hudson, and Ocean—it was revealed that about one-third of children diagnosed with autism also had intellectual disabilities. This means the remaining two-thirds did not possess any such additional impediments.

These findings demonstrate a greater need than ever before for more resources dedicated to helping those with autism live their best lives possible. This is a call to action for our state’s government and community organizations to come together to ensure that those with autism receive the care, support, and guidance they need. We must act quickly and decisively to meet the increasing demand for autism-related services.
