A Parent’s Guide to Schools for Children with Special Needs
If you suspect that your child may have special needs—do not panic. With so many specialized therapies, programs, services, and schools for children with special needs available, your child will get the help they need to reach their greatest potential.
As a parent, the first thing that you should do is get your child tested. It is essential not to delay testing. The sooner your child receives the help they need, the more likely they’ll succeed in school. Once your child gets tested, they will qualify for extra help. This can include speech therapy, occupational therapy, and counseling services.
When to Start Looking for Schools for Children with Special Needs
After identifying your child’s diagnosis, you can now begin the admissions process. To be placed into a private special education school, like The Deron School, your local district will need to send student records such as the IEP, educational testing, and social and psychological reports. The records will then be reviewed, and if the student is an appropriate candidate, the district case manager will be contacted to schedule an intake.
At The Deron School, the Child Study Team Case Manager, Parent(s)/Guardian(s), and the student are then invited to the intake meeting. During this meeting, our team will get to know your child as you tour our campus. Following the tour, all team members, including the family and district case manager, will then get together to discuss whether our campus will be an appropriate fit for your child. Typically, an admissions decision is reached upon the conclusion of the meeting.
