7 Tips to Help You Survive During the Holidays

Parents of children with special needs know all too well that the Holiday season can be full of excitement, hope, and disappointment. To make your Holidays more bearable, here are seven things to remember:

  1. Prepare yourself for tantrums and meltdowns. Quickly and calmly diffuse them.
  2. Don’t go overboard on Holiday decorations and lights. They tend to cause sensory overload for your child.
  3. Keep your receipts after shopping for gifts. It will make life easier when your child decides not to play with a toy you just bought.
  4. If the whole family is going to a Holiday party, take two cars. There’s no need to drag everyone back home after an incident.
  5. For an adult Holiday party, get helpers to watch your child in advance.
  6. Don’t go out and buy more presents the day before Christmas. It will be chaos in the store and cause you unnecessary stress.
  7. Take a moment to breathe and remember the meaning of the Holidays. This is the season to enjoy time with family and to be grateful for the good things in life.
